In a PR blast issued earlier this morning by THQ, it was announced that the release of Red Faction: Armageddon has been delayed to June 7th. The game was originally slated for a May 31st release, but now will drop on the first day of E3 2011. From the release:

On June 7, Red Faction®: ArmageddonTM is set to explode onto the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC in North America. Red Faction: Armageddon will ship internationally on June 10.

This is probably going to hurt some of you more than others. I loved Red Faction: Guerrilla, but when I had some hands-on time with Red Faction: Armageddon at E3 2010, I was left feeling a bit cold. The open-world of Guerrilla worked well for series, particularly suited to a game in which the planet Mars itself is the point. Seeing that they were ditching that in favor of a Gears of War style underground, claustrophobic setting kind of grated on me. Since then, gameplay footage and trailers have swung me back the other direction, and I’m a lot more excited about Armageddon than I thought I’d be.

Now it looks like I’ll have to wait to play, because Red Faction: Armageddon drops the day E3 2011 begins. I’ll console myself by ZOMGing my way through every upcoming game possible. The rest of you can play Armageddon on my behalf.

A couple of other notes:

* The Red Faction: Armageddon demo will be available on XBLA May 3. It will also be available for PSN… someday.

* They’re having a contest, offering $12,000 in prizes. You can find out more at visit www.redfaction.com/countdown.
